Discussing Visual Art
We will learn how to analyze and discuss visual art installations by going beyond our “feelings”.
Often, art is considered a subjective experience and this is, to a great degree, true. But we should be able to understand and appreciate art even if we don’t particularly “like” it. Moreover, expanding our understanding of what art is allows to go beyond the easy experiences. Often, great art is not meant only to uplift us, but to force us to reflect. Art encompasses the sublime and transcendent, but it also embraces the dark and the difficult. Great art makes us better people not by reflecting and wallowing in the best of humanity, but also by broaching and and discussing the worst of humanity.
